Quality Loft Ladders: Alufix 10-Tread Concertina Loft Ladder Review
By Nichlas M Johnson
Many home owners who have unused loft space often think that there isn't enough room to install a permanent loft
ladder. While it's true that in extremely cramped spaces, some loft ladders are not applicable, in many cases a
unique type of ladder called a "concertina" can be fitted. Concertina loft ladders are the answer
to many limited space and loft access problems. One ladder that works quite well in small spaces is the Alufix
10-tread concertina loft ladder.
About the Alufix 10-Tread Concertina
The first thing you notice about this loft ladder is its quality. Like all articulated concertina loft ladders, it collapses neatly into itself and stows out of the way on top of
the trapdoor, ready for use when needed, but completely out of the way when not needed. This ladder also
requires minimum vertical clearance, making it suitable for non-standard ceiling heights. A concertina ladder is
built on an articulated frame that unfolds into diamond-patterned stiles between which sturdy treads are
fixed.
The frame is held together with durable, strong steel or aluminium bolts. This ladder has some properties of a
staircase, including extra-deep 80mm treads (3 inches) that make it quite easy, safe and comfortable to climb. The
width of the treads is also generous, at 340mm. It's a good idea to choose a ladder with a rubberised, non-slip
coating on the treads for extra security when you're carrying large, heavy or bulky items. For additional
stability, choose a model that includes safety handrails. Another important feature for those with small children
is a concertina loft ladder with a child safety rail.
More Features of the Alufix
With a dual-spring controlled operating mechanism, the Alufix 10-tread has a hinged trapdoor that operates by
simply pulling it down using a pole with a hook attached. A spring-loaded suspension system holds the ladder firmly
in position. The quality of the springs is probably the most important features of a concertina, especially if you
plan to use it a great deal. The springs on the Alufix ladder are of superior quality.
Installation is simple because the ladder comes fully assembled. No special tools are required. The space-saving
design needs only minimal landing space. The maximum load capacity is a generous 100kg, but was tested to support
200kg. If your ceiling opening is unusually small, this ladder will fit the bill quite nicely with a minimum
requirement of 600 x 500mm for the hatch and a swing clearance requirement of 47mm.
The ladder fits spaces with floor-to-ceiling heights between 2.46 metres and 2.73 metres (8ft and 8ft11). If
you're on a tight budget, you should know that this ladder will make use of your existing trapdoor and fastens
directly onto the loft opening frame by way of a supplied wooden plate.
Alufix concertina loft ladders are a great choice for both limited spaces and
limited budgets
